Focus Story: Mobilizing forensic science to combat wildlife crime
In 2022, a wildlife DNA laboratory became operational in Uganda, with support from ICCWC and in partnership with the TRACE Wildlife Forensics Network and the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). The laboratory has been essential in supporting wildlife crime investigations and prosecutions through forensic casework. This work supported cases in Uganda and other African countries. A total of 37 wildlife crime investigations were supported through analyses at the lab in 2023, along with mentorship that were provided in Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
