Focus Story: Uniting countries to fight wildlife crime

In October 2025, 137 representatives from law enforcement agencies, judicial institutions, environmental ministries, non-governmental organizations and the private sector from over 35 African, Asian and European countries met in Bangkok, Thailand at the 9th iteration of the Wildlife Inter-Regional Enforcement (WIRE) Forum.

Over the course of a week, they discussed ongoing law enforcement cases, successful enforcement operations, trends in wildlife crime, and new tools to improve its detection. The Forum supported increased engagement with the transport and financial sectors. Cases discussed involved the cross-border movement of live animals, including endangered species seized in transit. Most importantly, real-time casework through restricted multilateral discussions was key to building bridges between regions and getting a step closer to solving ongoing wildlife crime investigations.
